ICELAND SUMMER 2018 WEST FJORDS

Juli 2018 I went to Iceland by ferry from Hirtshals (DK), via Faroer Islands to Seydisfjordur (Iceland). As soon as I got ashore I drove to the Lake Myvatn area, famous for its waterfowl and volcanic phenomena._DSC2912.jpg

I stayed on a campsite 30 km west of the lake. In the surrounding area of this campsite I managed to picture quite a number of interesting birds.

Very early I went to a secluded bay and used my floating hide, picturing Longtailed Duck, Slavonian Grebe and Red-necked Phalarope_DSC8562.jpg

After having spent two days at Myvatn I drove a long distance in one day, all the way to Bolungarvik in the West Fjords.

My main goal in this area was to pay a visit to Hornstrandir, a nature reserve on the most nort-western peninsula of the West Fjords. With a small boat in pretty high waves we went from Isafjordur to Hornvik, a beautiful bay. On both ends of this bay there are major seabird cliffs. Hornstrandir is famous for its landscapes, solitude, arctic foxes and hiking possibillities far away from human civilization. You have to bring your tent, cooking stuff, food for the time you are planning to stay here.

After spending 6 great days at Hornstrandir, camping with my tent, I was picked up by a speedboat of Westtours and brought back to Isafjordur. Not far from there I managed to picture Red-throated Divers in nice evening light.
